If you’ve never needed to hire roofing contractors before, you may be wondering how to choose the best company for the job. For this blog post we wanted to discuss some of the strategies you can use to find and interview companies.

Start with the basics

When you begin your search for roofing companies near me, you’ll also want to make sure that the company has experience working with the type of roofing materials you have on your home. For example, if your home has metal roof panels, you’ll want to find a contractor who understands how to fix and install metal roofing sheets. Similarly, if your home’s roof was built using aluminum roof panels, you’ll want to hire a contractor that’s familiar with that material.

Ask how long the company has been in business

You’ll also want to know how much experience the company has working with homeowners in your area.  If the company has been in business for  a long time, take some time to research their online reviews. Online reviews can often be found on websites such as Facebook, Yelp, Google+, Angie’s List and/or Home Advisor. Companies who have lots of 5-star reviews are likely a good bet. On the other hand, if you find lots of 1-2 star reviews and long lists of complaints about their professionalism, workmanship, or people have complained that work was not completed, this is a company you’ll want to stay away from.

Ask if they’re licensed and insured

Unlicensed roofers often provide potential clients with the lowest bid—but the lowest bid isn’t always the best bid. If you hire unlicensed contractors, you’ll have no recourse if they take your money and run. It’s also unlikely that you’d receive a warranty for workmanship and materials. If something goes wrong and your roof needs to be repaired, you may not be able to reach them.  Lastly, if the contractor is uninsured, this could cause additional problems. Why? Because if one of their workers is injured on your property, while on the job, you could be on the hook to pay their medical expenses. Always, always say “no” to working with unlicensed and/or uninsured contractors.
