Hiring a roofer is a lot different than hiring someone to help water your lawn.  For example, whereas any one of your neighbor’s kids could likely help care for your lawn and your porch plants while you’re away for a week,  when you hire a roofer, you need to make sure they’re licensed, bonded, and insured. You’ll also want to make sure you’re hiring a company that’s experienced in working with the types of materials that they’ll need to get the job done right, (i.e., if you have a tile roof, you’ll want to hire a company that understands the ins and outs of tile roofing).

Below are just a few of the signs that the company you’re talking to is legitimate.

They have an Internet presence

If the company you’re speaking with has a website, one or more social media pages, and they have a lot of positive online reviews, these are all good signs. On the other hand, if you can’t find a trace of them anywhere on the Internet- this is a big red flag.  This is definitely not a company that you’ll want to do business with.

They give you their license number

If a company is reputable, they’ll have no issues with providing you with their license # and insurance information. On the other hand, if you ask for this information and they try to skirt around it (or they try to change the subject), this is another huge red flag.  Why? Because it’s likely you’re either speaking with A) an unlicensed contractor or B) a scammer that’s less interested in doing the work and instead, they’re more interested in taking your money and skipping town.

They’re not going door to door

If a mechanic was going door to door in your neighborhood to drum up business, you’d likely be skeptical of hiring them. You should have that same level of skepticism if a roofing contractor is doing the same. Why? Because unlicensed contractors often tend to do this in areas that have been hit hard by recent storms.  They also tend to ask for large, up-front deposits. Once they receive the cash, many of them disappear into the night.

Be very skeptical about hiring any company that’s going door to door to try to gain new clients.
