If you’ve never needed to hire a roofing contractor before, or it’s been years since you’ve needed to schedule a repair, it’s natural to wonder where to start.  For example, if you hop on the Internet and do a quick Google search, you’re bound to get several pages of listings for local companies.

How do you sort the good from the bad?

Below are just a few of the tips you can use to make sure you hire the best company for the job.

Ask if they have experience working with the roofing materials you need help with

This might seem like a silly question, but you should know that not all roofing contractors are created alike. For example, whereas some specialize in working on tile roofing systems, others specialize in asphalt shingles, rubber roofing systems, flat roofing systems, and/or metal roofing systems, among others.  If the person you’re speaking with doesn’t have  a lot of prior experience working with your type of roofing system, you may want to find a person (or company) that does.

Additionally, if you need to have a skylight installed, repaired, or replaced, be sure to ask the contractor how many skylight installations they’ve performed throughout their career.  Remember- if they give you a cheap bid because this is something they haven’t done before (and you hire them based on price alone), there’s a risk that the job won’t be done correctly.

How experienced are you in general?

As we’ve mentioned in the past, there’s a big difference between hiring a new roofer and a new roofing company. For example, if John Smith has 20 years of industry experience and he’s finally decided to branch out on his own (and he’s assembled a team of seasoned, experienced roofers), his company could be a good choice. On the other hand, if Tom and Tim Jones did some roofing work when they were home from college last summer, and this year, they’ve decided to start advertising their services, hiring them could be a very risky move.
