Your roof is one of the most important (and expensive) components of your home.  Suffice to say, you want to be proactive in making sure that what you have lasts as long as possible.

You can think of your roof in the same way you think of your car. For example, if you maintain the engine and get oil changes as required, your vehicle will likely last a long time. On the other hand, if you don’t check and change your fluids, and you never change your oil, you’re going to shorten your car’s lifespan dramatically.

Below are just a few of the things that can do damage to your roofing system.

Drips and leaks

If you suspect your roof is leaking, contact a local roofer as quickly as possible. Small problems cost less to fix than big problems, so it’s best to get your roof checked out by an expert. If they determine that one or more repairs is needed, they’ll provide you with a detailed report of their findings. They’ll also provide you with a written cost estimate which will breakdown both the labor and materials costs.

Depending on why your roof is leaking, there’s a chance the repairs could be covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy. (i.e., if your roof was damaged in a recent storm, and this is what caused the leak, this may qualify as a covered repair.)

Moss on your roof

Moss on a roof can cause serious damage. Why? Because it holds moisture against your roofing materials. Not only can this damage roof shingles and tiles, it can also damage your flashing. If your flashing fails, there’s a good chance that some of the moisture that’s outside of your home, can seep into the membranes of your roof. This can also dramatically shorten the lifespan of your roofing system.

Poor workmanship

Lastly, if you need to have your roof repaired, you shouldn’t cut corners.  First, be sure to hire a company that has experience in working with the types of materials that you have atop your home.  Second, make sure they’re both licensed and insured.

Hiring a roofer isn’t something you should do based on repair quotes alone. Don’t just go with the company that gives you the best quote. Take some time, do your research, and hire a company that’s best for the job.
