Everyone has heard roof repair scam horror stories. For example, earlier this year, the owner of a “roofing company” in Port St. Lucie was arrested after he allegedly took tens of thousands of dollars from customers and failed to perform any work.
In one instance, a client provided the company with more than $4,000 for a deposit. Not only did the company take her money and disappear, when she tried to contact them online, their website indicated they were “temporarily closed.”
Another client experienced something similar after providing a roofer with a $5,000 deposit. In another case, a third client paid a deposit with the understanding that work would begin in several weeks. Weeks then turned into months, and when the workers finally showed up to start the job, they made a mess tearing the old roof off, and never showed back up to install the replacement.
Suffice to say, if you need to have your roof repaired or replaced, these are exactly the types of situations that you want to avoid.
Signs your roofer is reputable
If you need to hire a roofer, do your research. Make sure they have a proper website (as opposed to Craigslist listing), that they’re licensed, and insured. If you want to check their license status, you can look them up online using this website.
You should also take some time to research the company you’re considering. Do they have one or more social media pages? Do they have positive reviews on websites such as Angie’s List, Home Advisor, and Google+? Are they a member of the BBB? Or have past clients filed complaints against them with the BBB?
All of these things are important to consider.
Lastly, if the contractor offers to provide you with a free roof inspection or a free repair estimate, they explain their findings fully, and they give you a detailed written estimate (that includes their logo, company name, address, contact info, and license number), that breaks down the labor and materials costs for the work– and they don’t try to use high pressure sales tactics to get your business, you’re likely in good hands.
