Was your roof damaged in a recent storm? Is it aging and you’re starting to wonder if it’s time for you to replace it?  Regardless as to why you need to hire roofing contractors, there are several steps you can take to ensure that you hire the best company for the job.

Ask about their experience

If you have a tile roofing system, you want to hire a company that has a wealth of experience in working with those types of roofing materials. If the company you’re speaking with deals mostly with asphalt shingle, metal, rubber, or even flat roofing systems, it may be best to find a different contractor (regardless as to how good their reviews are.)

Ask how long they’ve been in business

Are we saying a company that’s only been in business for 18 months is a bad choice? Not necessarily. For example, if Jim Smith, who has 10+ years working as a roofing contractor, has decided to leave his employer and branch out on his own, that’s one thing—especially if he’s hired a team of experienced roofers. On the other hand, if Tom Jones has a brand-new company, and his only prior experience is the 2 summers he spent working as a roofer while he was on semester break from college, that’s a completely different story.  The purpose of this question is to gauge the experience level of the company you’re considering.  If the company has been around for a while, take some time to research them online. Do they have lots of positive online reviews, or do they have a long list of customer complaints?  If lots of prior clients have good things to say about the level of customer care and customer service they received, you’ll likely be in good hands.

Ask if they’re licensed and insured

Lastly, you should always check to make sure a potential contractor has the right credentials. You should never, ever, hire an unlicensed / uninsured roofing company.  Why? Because you run the risk of needing to deal with any number of problems, such as them taking your money and disappearing, them starting a job only to disappear halfway through, or having them accidentally do more harm than good. If you work with an unlicensed, uninsured roofer and you wind up getting scammed, you won’t have any recourse.
