If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a thousand times. Your roofing system is among the most important parts, if not the most important part of your home. Not only does it help keep the sun, wind, and rain outside, it protects your walls, your floors and your belongings from the elements.

Replacing a roof can be expensive- and it’s not something that anyone wants to have to do more frequently than necessary. Below are just a few of the roof care fails that homeowners need to be mindful of.

Not cleaning your gutters

Your gutter system serves a purpose: they collect rainwater and direct it away from your home. If it weren’t for your gutters, rainwater would seep down all the exterior walls of your house. Not only can this damage the sides of your home, it could cause mold / mildew and/or leaks to develop.  Cleaning and maintaining your gutters will help ensure they function as they’re supposed to.  Not cleaning your gutters can potentially lead to one or more expensive repairs.

Letting an inexperienced solar panel installer put solar panels on their roof

As we noted in our previous blog, if you want to go solar, be sure you’re hiring a reputable, experienced company. If you let an inexperienced company install panels atop of your home, there’s a better-than-average chance that their workers will accidentally cause harm to your roofing system. This can lead to all sorts of headaches. For example, if you don’t discover the damage until after the solar instillation is complete, having it repaired is going to be that much more difficult. Believe us when we tell you that this is something you’ll want to avoid.

Pressure washing your roof is a terrible idea

Lastly, please, please don’t even think about pressure washing your roof. Regardless as to whether you have a tile roofing system or your roof is made of asphalt shingles, pressure washing it can cause a lot of damage. (And, fun fact, that damage can definitely shorten the lifespan of your roofing system.)
