Either way, you’ll want to make sure you hire the best company for the job. For this post, we wanted to highlight some of the questions you should ask potential contractors while you’re in the process of soliciting bids.
How long has your company been in business?
Although the amount of time a company has been in business isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, but is something you’ll want to know. For example, if James Jameson has spent the past 20 years working in the roofing industry, and in 2019, he decided to start his own company, that’s one thing. On the other hand, if John Johnson worked as a roofing apprentice when he was on break from college last summer, and now that he’s graduated, he decided to start a roofing business, that’s another. The bottom line is that you’ll want to hire a company that has the expertise, the experience, and the skills needed to get the job done right.
Are you licensed and insured?
This is a big one—because you should never, ever hire an unlicensed contractor. If the company representative that you’re speaking with tries to skirt this question, or you get the sense they’re saying they’re licensed, bonded, and insured, but you’re not sure if they’re being truthful, it’s OK to hang up and call someone else.
Are you experienced in working on this type of roofing system?
Just because someone is experienced in working with asphalt shingles, that’s not to say they’re experts in metal roof repair. Regardless as to the type of roof you have atop your home, you’ll want to hire a contractor who knows how to fix it. If you have additional questions about the quality of their workmanship, ask the company you’re speaking with if they can provide you with one or more references. When you ask for references, be sure to ask for prior clients who have a last name that starts with a certain letter. This can help ensure you’re getting a random sample.
