Your roof is among the most important (and expensive) components of your home. If you’ve come to the decision that it’s time to repair or replace it, you’ll want to make sure you hire the best company for the job.  You should also know that if you’ve never needed to hire a roofer before, there’s a right (and wrong) way to go about it. For example, looking for a roofer on Craigslist is generally a bad idea.  Looking for a roofer by evaluating online reviews on websites such as Google+, Angie’s List, and Home Advisor, is a much better bet.  As you’ve started to narrow down your selection of potential vendors, be sure to keep the following things in mind.

Make sure they have a healthy online presence

One of the most important things to consider when evaluating contractors is whether you can find them online. Do they have a website? Do they have social media pages? Do they have online reviews?  Reputable companies want potential customers to find them. If the company you’re considering doesn’t have a website (or they only have a Facebook page), you should be very, very wary about hiring them.

Their contractor’s license number checks out

Another thing you can do to ensure you’re hiring a legitimate company is to ask them for their contractor’s license number. Once you have it, you’ll want to check the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation website to ensure their license is active.   Never, ever work with an unlicensed contractor. Although unlicensed contractors often charge far less than their licensed counterparts, the risks associated with working with an unlicensed roofer are far too great to ignore.  Examples include:

  • Having them take your deposit only to disappear
  • Having them disappear before they complete the work
  • Shoddy workmanship
  • Not receiving a labor or materials warranty
  • Being personally liable for any injuries their workers sustain while working at your property

They’re not knocking on all of the doors in your neighborhood

Last but not least, you should never hire a roofing contractor that’s going door to door to drum up business. Reputable, licensed, professional roofers would never do this. Instead, they get new business through referrals, their online marketing efforts, and their online reviews.
