Regardless as to whether your roof was damaged in a recent storm or you’ve found you need a roof repair estimate due to simple wear-and-tear, you’ll want to make sure you hire the best company for the job.  If you start your search by pulling out your trusty Yellow Pages (or you decide to start your search by hopping onto Google), you’re likely to find a long list of companies that service the area that you live in. The trick is knowing how to sort the good, from the bad, from the downright ugly.

Starting from the top:  Ask for referrals

Do you have a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or relative that lives nearby that had their roof repaired or replaced in the past several years? If so, you may want to ask them for the name of the company they worked with. Chances are, if that company did a good job for them, they’ll also do a good job for you. On the other hand, if your neighbor tries to convince you to hire their son’s college roommate’s older brother who worked for 2-months as a roofer last summer, that’s probably not the person you want to go with.

Check to make sure they have an online presence

Reputable companies want to be found. Regardless as to whether you’ve found a contractor via a referral or through an Internet search, you’ll want to see how much of a presence they have online.  Do they have a website? Social media pages? Do they have favorable reviews on Yelp, Google+, Angie’s List or Home Advisor? Is their website fully built out, or is it just a landing page with a phone number? Does the company have complaints registered against them with the BBB?

If the only thing you can find is a Craigslist ad and/or website with a landing page, the “company” likely isn’t licensed or insured. This is not someone you want to hire.

Get a few quotes

Lastly, be sure to get quotes from several reputable companies. You’ll also want to keep in mind that the cheapest quote may not be the best quote. The goal is to hire a company that’s experienced, reputable, and that has a history of working with the types of materials that you have atop your home.
