In our last blog post we talked about the reasons you’ll want to hire a licensed, insured roofing contractor. For this post, we wanted to discuss some of the other things you’ll want to consider.

Get several bids

When it comes time to repair or replace your roof, you’ll want to get bids from several local companies. The bids you receive should be detailed and they should be printed on company letterhead. They should include the company’s full name, address, contractor’s license number and phone number. The bids should also include a full breakdown of the costs, including materials and workmanship costs. If the company you’re talking with doesn’t want to give you something in writing, or they jot down a number on a piece of notebook table, this is not a company you want to do business with.

Research each company

As we’ve noted in the past, the cheapest bid isn’t always the best bid. Take your time and do some research. Does the company have one or more social media pages? Do they have photos of past projects they’ve worked on? Do they have favorable reviews on websites such as Google+, Facebook, Angie’s List, or Home Advisor? Online reviews are the new “word of mouth” reviews. If their past customers have lots of good things to say about them, that’s a very, very good sign. On the other hand, if all you can find is a long list of customer complaints, it’s OK to move onto the next candidate.

Ask for referrals within your network

Lastly, did your neighbor recently have his roof redone? Has one or more of your coworkers repaired or replaced their roof in the past several years? Do you have family members that live in the area, who have recently had their roofing systems worked on? Ask them about the company they hired. If the contractor did a great job for them, there’s a very good chance they’ll also do a great job for you.
