When properly cared for, your roofing system will last a long time. However, it’s not going to last forever. If you’ve come to the conclusion that it’s time to reroof your home, you’ll want to make sure you hire the best company for the job.

This is especially important if you’ve never needed to reroof a home before. As you start the process there are several things you’ll want to look for. For example, is the company local? Do they have a website? Are they licensed and insured? You’ll also want to ask them if they can provide you with a list of local references. Checking out their social media pages is also worthwhile. Not only will this allow you to see examples of their recent work, their online reviews can tell you a lot about the level of customer service that they provide to their clients.

Beware of door-to-door solicitors

If you’ve decided it’s time to evaluate roofing contractors, what you don’t want to do is to hire the company that’s knocking on every door in the neighborhood. Reputable roofers don’t go door-to-door in an attempt to drum up business. In most cases, these salesmen aren’t licensed and/or are uninsured- and hiring them will come with several risks.

First, there’s no guarantee that they won’t take your money and run. Second, you won’t have any guarantee that they won’t start the work only to disappear before the job is done. Lastly, and this is perhaps the most important thing you’ll want to consider—is if an uninsured worker gets injured while performing a job on your property, you might be personally liable to cover their medical expenses.

Is hiring an unlicensed roofer typically cheaper than hiring a licensed company? Yes. Is saving a few bucks on the front end of a transaction worth the pain and aggravation you’ll likely face on the back end of that transaction?  Absolutely not.
